In 1979, Bill and Diane Clayton founded Clayton Tree Farm (originally Clayton Nursery) by planting 2,500 trees on their farm near Boise, Idaho. In 2002, the farm expanded and relocated 20 miles west to the farming community of Wilder. Today, Clayton Tree Farm produces about 25,000 trees annually for the Intermountain region.
Thanks to our semi-arid climate, we specialize in cold-hardy trees well-suited to our surrounding states. The hot summer temperatures and low humidity in our area allow us to ship year-round, even in the summer, to customers in Idaho, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. Many of our customers report that our dormant trees acclimate well to new environments, and our summer-shipped trees experience significantly less transplant shock compared to those from other regions.
For over 40 years, our core offering has been Balled and Burlapped deciduous trees, but we also grow containerized trees. Since the mid-90s, we’ve been cultivating #7 to #20 containers using a pot-in-pot system. In the past 15 years, we developed a specialized #25 growing system.
Our #25 trees are grown to reach a 2” caliper, developing the canopy of a field-grown tree with an even more fibrous root system. These trees can be harvested and shipped year-round, even during the summer heat. Due to positive customer feedback, we’ve steadily increased our production of #25s over the past decade.
We serve a wide range of businesses, shipping trees in various sizes. While most of our customers are in the Intermountain region, we’ve also shipped as far as Connecticut and Chicago.
We typically have two primary shipping seasons: from the end of February to mid-April, and from late October to early December. However, in recent years, we've been shipping more frequently during the summer months. In the spring and fall, when the trees are dormant, we ship on flatbed trucks, and during the warmer months, we use 53' refrigerated trucks.
Though we strive to accommodate smaller orders, due to shipping constraints and costs, we generally maintain a half truckload minimum.
